Public Speaking Goals Start with
Statewide Contest in 1999 1-Minute
Talks without Notes (Grades 3-6)
BOSTON, MA, May 2 - The finals of the first public speaking contest sponsored by Speaking
American attracted students from elementary schools in Boston, Plymouth and Worcester. Talks
ranged from Shakespeare to original pieces prepared by the students.
Ms. D. Heidi Wolf, founder of Speaking American, said "We are delighted to provide this
forum for youngsters to get before a live audience and express themselves without notes or
index cards. A 1-Minute Talk is doable for students who are busy with so many demands on their
time as well as for teachers, parents and friends who are also on time roller coasters."
